Controlling sound in timber buildings
Timber is light and stiff, which makes it efficient to build with but more prone to transmitting impact and airborne sound than heavier concrete construction. In flats, apartments and multi-occupancy timber buildings, controlling that sound isn't optional — it's a regulatory requirement. Acoustic performance is achieved by decoupling: separating surfaces with resilient layers so vibration can't travel freely from one room or dwelling to the next.

Resilient profiles, brackets and underlays
Resilient bars and profiles isolate plasterboard from the timber frame, breaking the path for airborne sound through walls and ceilings. Vibration-isolating brackets carry services and linings without rigid contact, and acoustic underlays beneath floor finishes reduce impact sound — footsteps, dropped objects — passing to the room below. Used together as a system, these components help timber floors and walls meet the impact and airborne sound limits set out in Approved Document E.

Sound insulation in separating floors and walls is tested and must meet defined performance values. Specifying the right decoupling system early, and detailing it correctly on site, is the reliable route to passing pre-completion testing.
