SBS A2 | AISI304 · Self-drilling timber-to-metal screw
SBS A2 fixes timber straight onto a steel or aluminium substructure. The tip drills the metal as the screw goes in, so there is no pilot hole to make first.
It is a bimetal screw. The head and body are A2 | AISI304 stainless steel, for corrosion resistance. The tip is carbon steel, because carbon steel drills better. The bleeder tip cuts through steel and aluminium, and fins on the shank protect the thread while it passes through the timber. Sharp ribs under the head leave a clean finish on the wood.
It is suitable for outdoor use in service classes 1 to 3. The atmospheric and wood corrosivity classes it is rated for are in the Specifications tab.

What it drills through
How thick a plate it drills depends on the diameter. The 4.8 mm screw drills S235 steel from 1 to 3 mm and aluminium from 2 to 3 mm. The 5.5 mm screw drills steel from 2 to 5 mm and aluminium from 3 to 5 mm. The 6.3 mm screws drill steel from 3 to 6 mm and aluminium from 4 to 8 mm. Each range has a bottom as well as a top, so check your plate against the code before you order.
Sizes
Three diameters, four codes. 4.8 × 45 mm and 5.5 × 55 mm take a TX25 drive. 6.3 × 70 mm and 6.3 × 120 mm take TX30. The bit is included.
Box quantity is not the same across the range. The 4.8 and 5.5 mm screws come 200 to a box, the 6.3 mm screws 100 to a box. Read the pack quantity from the row rather than assuming one figure.
Before you fix
- No pre-drilled hole is needed
- Set the drill speed to the metal: about 1,000 to 1,500 rpm into steel, about 600 to 1,000 rpm into aluminium
- The steel figures on the datasheet are for S235 steel
- Check your plate is inside the range for your code, not only under the maximum
