Keeping timber posts off the ground
The fastest way to rot a timber post is to set it directly into the ground or concrete, where trapped moisture attacks the end grain. Post bases solve this by raising the post above the slab on a galvanised or stainless steel support, allowing air to circulate and water to drain away. Adjustable post bases add height and level tuning — invaluable when setting pergola legs, carport posts or deck supports over uneven or sloping ground.

Corrosion class matters
For anything in ground contact, near the coast or exposed to de-icing salts, corrosion finish is critical. SC3 finishes suit most external UK applications, while SC4 stainless options are specified for coastal, swimming-pool and high-exposure environments where standard galvanising would degrade. Choosing the right class first time avoids premature failure of an otherwise sound structure.
